Richard Bedon Screven papers, 1836-1867.

This collection consists primarily of letters written by Richard Bedon Screven to his wife, Louise Pintard Davidson, during his tour of duty in the Mexican-American War. They include many observations on the people, customs, and climate of Mexico. There are also a number of references to U.S. Army officers such as Gen. Winfield Scott and Gen. Zachary Taylor. There are a few letters to Capt. And Mrs. R.B. Screven from army friends. In the collection are three manuscript maps: "Hasty Sketch of Dry Dortugas Keys...," 1830; map of the region of some of the engagements in Mexico; "Map of a reconnaissance of the road from Camargo to Serralvo made by Capt. Duncan, 2nd Artillery;" engraved map: "Monterey and Its Approaches," drawn by Lt. Benjamin; engr. Especially for the N.O. Picayune; and a copy of General Orders No. 72, March 28, 1847 for the occupation of Vera Cruz by American forces (missing as of Feb. 23, 1978). There are also clippings and pages from various newspapers, mostly of New Orleans, with maps and stories, covering various engagements in the war. One clipping is General Order 14, March 18, 1849, regarding promotions, etc., in which Screven is listed as Lt. Colonel by brevet for Molino del Rey. The 1865-1867 letters are to Mrs. Screven and concern her pension for Col. Screven's services.

Richard Bedon Screven (1808-1851) graduated from the West Point Military Academy in 1828 and joined the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd Infantry. Zachary Taylor (1784-1850), the twelfth president of the United States. In 1841, he was appointed to the command of the Sourthern Division of the United States.
